Ingrown toenails in children

Ingrown toenail is a condition characterized by pain, swelling, redness, and even infection as a result of the edge of the nail sinking into the skin. Ingrown toenails in children are as common as in adults and usually occur on the nails on the big toes or fingers.

Ingrown nails can be caused by incorrect nail cutting technique, tight or narrow shoes, the shape of the nail bed, thickening of the skin around the nail, or injury to the skin tissue around the nail edge. Ingrown toenails are a condition that must be treated, as they often cause pain and discomfort.

Treatment options may include removing the pointed edge of the nail, special nail clipping techniques, regular softening of the skin around the nail, choosing the appropriate size and shape of shoes, and using antibiotics. In advanced cases, surgical intervention may be required.

In order to prevent ingrown nails, it is recommended to cut the nails of children correctly, to choose suitable shoes for air circulation between the toes, to soften the skin around the nails regularly, to cut the sharp parts of the nail edges regularly and to prevent the nail biting habits of children.

If your child has a condition such as ingrown nails, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional. The health care professional will evaluate the severity of the ingrown toenail and inform you about the treatment options.
